Abstract: In this talk we examine how high performance computing has changed over the last 10-year and look toward the future in terms of trends. These changes have had and will continue to have a major impact on our numerical scientific software. We will look at the challenges and opportunities presented by the convergence of HPC, big data, and machine learning. We will discuss what is driving this convergence and what capabilities might it provide over the current scope/timescale of traditional HPC.

Dr. Nicolas Christin
Abstract: In the past decade, the cryptocurrency trading landscape has evolved from a collection of spot markets (fiat for cryptocurrency) to a hybrid ecosystem featuring complex and popular derivatives products. While most discussion surrounding cryptocurrency trading has focused on technical aspects -- how to make trades faster, better, and more decentralized -- Dr. Christin will argue that we must urgently pay attention to what users (i.e., traders) are actually doing. To do so, he will summarize our recent body of work on the subject. At a technical level, the extensive use of AI/machine-learning techniques, combined with the wealth of publicly available data allows us to get actionable intelligence on user behavior. Dr. Christin will discuss three recent efforts based on extensive data collection and analysis, in which they looked at the trading ecosystem, characterized drivers for people to start trading, and examined social media influence on trading patterns. The common thread to this entire arc of research is the tremendous user excitement about cryptocurrency derivatives trading. At the same time, retail-level traders appear extremely vulnerable, in the absence of guardrails similar to those in traditional finance, making it vital for the ecosystem to start self-regulating before (inter)national regulatory bodies come up with a heavier-handed approach.

Abstract: Tokenisation is revolutionising the world of finance, enabling the representation of real-world assets as digital tokens on blockchain networks. This talk explores the current state and prospects of real-world asset tokenisation in the era of digital finance. We delve into the benefits of tokenisation and the key distinctions between tokenised assets and cryptocurrencies which have profound implications to the ecosystem, regulatory development, and financial infrastructure. In addition, we will discuss the current industry trends and the future directions of tokenisation, including the new opportunities it presents with the advancement of artificial intelligence technologies. Further, we present a case study of Standard Chartered as part of the Project Guardian by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, showcasing our commitment in advancing responsible tokenisation. As tokenisation continues to gain momentum globally, this talk underscores its transformative potential and the opportunities it presents for financial institutions, investors, and the broader digital economy.
